Kennel Club/BVA GSD Hip & Elbow Scores The BVA Canine Health Schemes serve to provide dog breeders with the option of testing for certain inherited diseases, to enable them to breed only from dogs which have fewer or no signs of inherited disease and thus help to reduce the incidence of these diseases.

is elbow scoring necessary...

Hi not been on here for quite a while, looking for some advice after speaking with my vet yesterday about getting my dogs hips an elbows scored i am not sure wether the elbows are necessary, my vet said that if it were labradors he would highly recommend it but he thinks that just getting the hips done on gsd's is enough, what do you ppl think and have any of you had both done...thks

Elbows are a must in the GSD as even breeding clear to clear can produce some affected progeny. There are 4 types of ED and dependent on the type a dog could have a grade 3 (severe) and not show clinical signs, your vet obviously does not know much about the genetics and hereditary health problems of the GSD.

Definitely. They need doing as there is a problem within the breed. Unfortunately your vet's a little behind the times as are a lot of them I'm afraid.

Archie's hips are fine.

His eblows are riddled with arthritis/severely dysplastic.

We had no idea whatsoever until we took him to a joint specialist at a veterinary hospital hours away to have his bursitis over his hocks looked at. The specialist checked out his hips and elbows at the same time, noted stiffness in both elbows. Our ordinary vet missed it completely. Only indication of it was that he never bowed as low as other dogs when playing. If they're equally bad in both front legs, then they don't limp.

Get elbows checked too.
