I took Shiel out from the kennels today, firstly to get him out of the kennel environment and secondly just to see how much progress he has made and how he copes with everyday goings on.
The first time I met Shiel he was so affraid he really wanted to take my head off. Thankfully he is very easily won over by treats, so we made friends very quickly. Having visited him a few times now there was no issue what so ever.
He came happily out of the kennel for me, crossed the field where the horse grazes giving the horse a wuff as we passed. He travelled well in my car cage, until he saw a dog walking by which he bark at it for a short time.
I took him to the beach on a long line and he had a blast, running circles, chasing waves and being chased by waves
The beach was quiet today so not too many dogs. The ones we did see he wanted to pull towards but we just moved on. We then ventured onto the street where he coped fantastically with the loud busy traffic.
He was not happy about people walking towards us and kept crossing over me to 'check them out'. He didn't get close to anyone as I was wary about how he would react. He is very unsure of children (he needs a home with no kids). A few dogs past us on the pavement and he didn't react well to them at all, barking and trying to get towards them. We just kept moving and he quickly forgot about them.
He did pretty well for his first adventure into the big bad world imo. He needs a good bit of work but we didnt do much correction today as I felt it was enough for him just to see all the new sights and sounds. We will work on dog greetings/ignoring people walking.
Shiel is a fantastically loving, and quick to trust wee boy. Whoever takes this boy on will as Stuart has said have a great loyal companiion. They just need to remember he has a lot to see and learn about this world.
