Kita - 6yr old Bitch looking for home

Hi

Posting here today is hard but having taken a great deal of time thinking about this it is ultimately the only right thing for my German Sheppard Kita.

I’m not really sure what I do and don’t need to detail here so apologies if this is too long or if I miss anything out.

I suffer with a bad back and have been physically unable to walk Kita since she was a puppy, earlier last year my marriage broke down and as a result there is no longer anyone able to walk her. We’ve tried finding alternatives but nothing has worked and over the last year she has become increasingly unhappy.

I will say at this point she will need someone who has the time and patience to get her back into the active lifestyle she so very much needs, and despite having a lovely temperament she has picked up a couple of bad habits (I will explain in more detail further down) which someone with a firm handling of dogs should have no issue fixing

So a little more about Kita.....

She is 6 years old and comes from pedigree parents both kennel club although Kita was not kennel club, I was told at the time this was due to the mother being too young but I don’t know enough about these things to know for sure.

She has been with my family since a puppy, and currently lives in a home with 2 children (currently 9 + 15 the youngest was a toddler when she came to us) and a cat. She is also used to large numbers of kittens beating her up after the cat had a litter, she didn’t bat an eye lid.

She has always had good contact with other people although has on 2 prior occasions taken a dislike to someone in my home. Her reaction was to simply sit at their feet and growl although she did nothing else and was easy to move away. I later realised this appeared to have been created by a habit of mine. She has never really lost her puppiness, and as such can be a little over excitable when people come in the house. As a result I had been putting her outside out of habit when letting guests into the home, and then once they were in I would let her back in to say hello. This seemed to be calmer for both guest and Kita. On the two occasions she didn’t take kindly the problem seemed to be that I had let the guest in without shutting Kita out first. If she is not familiar with the person at the door they need to have their presence within the home before she sees them and then she accepts them without question.

She is used to both children and animals, cats and dogs... although in the last year as she’s become sad I’ve noted she seems less tolerant of other dogs, I’m not quite sure if this is a desire to play and reaction to rejection or not but as this only seemed to come about since she’s been lacking activity I’m hopeful a return to activity will see this problem disappear again.
She has a beautiful temperament, loves human attention.
She isn’t a lover of pet toys, no idea why she just never really seemed bothered with them.
She’s used to eating dry food and enjoys slops although treats she can take or leave.
She has no issue with being left alone.

Her faults –

She can get over excited which for a German shepherd some find a little overwhelming/ annoying.
She has some bad habits as a result of conflicting training as a puppy. Husband and I never seemed to agree to which method was best, for example he would feed her from his plate, I never allow this. However I am confident given consisting rules/ boundaries she will quickly pick up better habits as despite conflicting rules in the home she knew what was acceptable with me, and never tried to push the limit.

Oh .... almost forgot... due to lack of finances she is behind on her jabs.
She has also NOT been spayed

While I know she is good with children I am unsure how she will mentally cope with leaving the family and moving into another one so ideally think she would be best suited to someone without children able to spend time with her.

If you have any questions please ask. I feel like I’ve said loads but no doubt missed something.

Here are a couple of pics...

kita is just really nicekita is just really nice
Hi, welcome to the forum.

What a shame you are having to rehome Kita.

Would it not be possible to find someone to walk her for you? When I was 15ish I used to walk a neighbours GSD for them (they worked full time and left her in the garage). You could try an advert in local pet shops or the local paper - there might well be someone in your area that would love to walk a GSD but maybe don't have the time to own one full time (maybe they work etc.). Lots of people have to rehome their dogs for the opposite reasons to you - they just don't have the time to spend with the dogs at home.

If you say what area you are in there may be someone on here that could help?

She looks lovely (my Kita was a long coat as well, sadly I lost her a good few years ago).

Be careful who you let her go to - there are sadly lots of people who would just get her so that they could breed from her.

Sue

Welcome Lolypop, I really hope that your first post on the forums, is not the begining of the end for you, before you finaly go and say goodbye to Kita, ask around here, tell us where you are, if possible lets see if we can find some help for you, you clearly love the dog, theres maybe a way that you can still keep her.

Sorry to hear this.

Kits is a beautiful looking dog. All I can say is take your time and don't rush into anything so that Kita gets the best possible outcome of this. I hope somebody can be of help to you on this site. As others have said, let's us know where you are in case anyone lives near you and could help and get in touch with gsd rescue.

All the best.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

I knew I would forget to mention something, trust it to be something so obvious as location.

I am in Bristol about half way between Bristol and Bath

in response to some suggestions above, as I'm sure you can appreciate this was the last option having exhuasted all other options, trying to find others to walk etc despite best efforts we've come to no avail and now here we are.

I've tried searching out rescue homes but they all seem located quite some distance away and the one person I found who appeared to be able to help hasnt been able to make pre arranged visits despite best intentions, I can only assume because so busy.

I've been holding off as long as possible, as i said above its been a year now but have reached a point where the decision has had to be taken, she really is miserable and its just not fair on her.

joyce will become famous soon enough
Do you drive???
If so can you not take her to a local park/field/beach let her have her exercise without you having to walk her on a lead, if rehoming her is the only option think about getting her speyed before rehoming that way you can be reasured she is not taken for the wrong reasons.
I hope you find the best solution soon for her x

I dont mean to sound rude but when I say this was the last option did you really not think if I couldve done that I would have?

I dont have a car, nor do I have the finances to spay her. I was married, now a single mother of two working part time. If I could pay someone to walk her I would, if I could pay for her to be spayed I would. If I could afford a car to take her to the park I would buy one.

I cant, I have as I've said in both my previous posts exhausted all options, please dont state the obvious to me, this entire situation is hard enough as it is.

But the guys on here are trying to assess what you have tried and what you havent, Trying to help incase there is a way of you keeping your furry kid , no one is trying to frustrate you, or make it difficult, as a forum we all pull together, try and help in ALL situations hun, Joyce doesnt know your circumstances on how/what you have tried, and as sad as it is, there are ppl out there who will breed from an entire bitch, use her as a puppy machine etc, trust us it does happen.

Thanks Super, forgive my frustration but I had said a few times this was a last resort so something as simply as driving her to a park just wasnt helpful.

However I've posted on another site a few moments ago and I'll check out the links you've suggested, thanks
