Poly is a jewel in the rough
Just had a thought...

Where did you get Jake from ie breeder wise?

reason I ask is that most breeders ask that all dogs be returned to them if you cannot keep them anymore and in turn they will rehome.....Im just thinking that if there really is no way of you keeping him then that should really be your first port of call...

Thanks Charlie and im sure if we decide on the better option we will need plenty advice on introducing the baby. Im still not very sure on leaving him in the lounge because he stil likes to chew on carpet and skirting boards when bored.

We just kept Gizmo downstairs so that there was an area that was hair free(well as hair free as possible lol)
Jake has never been allowed upstairs so thats not a problem,,, but somehow i always seem to find hairs in the underwear draws even still lol!!

Do you know anyone who will walk him because they like dogs, yes there are people like that about, my neighbour walks another neigbours dog, rain hale or shine, because she likes dogs, no other reason
We have only been here a short while and i dont think ive even seen our neighbour on the left side lol... its the kind of street where nobody looks anybody in the eye but im slowly getting to know some regular dog walkers on the field so that could be a future option.

When we went on holiday last summer and they went to kennels for the week she thought we had given him away and spent the whole holiday asking for him She had me in tears I felt so guilty. This year it's a camping holiday with the dogs lol

I would just like to say that I think everyone is being a bit hard on this person.

It is not an easy decision to come to - but sometimes it is the right one.

Dogs don't always pine and suffer just because they are rehomed. I have seen many GSD's successfully rehomed and they soon settle in (especially if they are from a loving home originally). The ones that have 'issues' are usually from homes that have been uncaring or have mistreated the dog (or ones that have not trained the dog in the first place).

I used to work in a kennels and it is amazing how many people say 'my dog pines when I leave it in kennels' - I never saw one dog that pined or refused its food!! The majority of dogs loved being in the kennels as they loved the routine and being around other dogs. Of course the owners of the kennels never told the owners of the dogs that - most owners would not understand, they like to think the dog misses them.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes there are ways round problems and dogs should not be rehomed on a whim or just because a baby arrives. BUT everyone's heart has to be in keeping the dog - it is no good us persuading a person to hang onto the dog if say the persons OH starts to resent the dog. She may have good reason to fear the dog will be problematic with a baby. It may all be too much to take on - after all both dog and baby will take up an awful lot of time and you have to bear in mind that the dog must NEVER be left alone with a baby/child - even for 5 mins. whilst you nip to the loo. I would imagine being a mum for the first time is scary enough without having to think about a dog all the time as well. How would you manage a pram and a dog (especially a young bouncy one)? OK with training and time it is possible - but maybe people don't have the time or the confidence.

There is plenty of advice available for introducing a dog to a new baby, but that is very much down the line and I am sure you need to discuss this much more with your OH.

Also there is a specialist GSD rescue forum called BIGGSD (which you can post your details on) if you do decide to go ahead and rehome your dog.

Sue

i just read this from start to finish and dont think anyone is being over-critical they are just trying to offer a different oppinion/option to losing what he so clearly states is his beloved dog, and they are offering there advice based on his/dogs main concerns, and id have to agree with the majority,

we have a 4 year old, and jake(4 months) doesnt really bother much about her in doors, does his own thing and allows her to do hers, outside is diff..he follows her everywhere down the park, keeps a very close eye on her, our first shepherd (diesal) used to walk in toe with my little brothers buggy and lets say he was not keen on strangers aproaching anywhere near daniel, loved em to bits...

you have till aug to train him, patience and perseverance and you'll see a massive diff in a very short time,

hope you make the right choice for both of you..and dont feel pestered mate, people are only tryin to stop you makin a desision you'd regret...

do you leave him any specific toys to keep him busy when you are out?

i'm trying to suggest things for him to keep him aqqupied so he doesn't chew and as a result he could possibly be allowed more areas in the house to go to when you are out!

most GSD are fine to be left as long as they have a good walk before hand.

you stated that you can't let him off leash, but have you tried a long line? this would give him more freedom, but you will still have him under control.

i know that road walks don't really tire my GSD out, unless we are walking for hours and hours, but a good run with training and chasing her ball will tire her out easily.

Hi I do appreciate all the input, as it really has helped.... there was alot of information i didnt know, and obviously we thought we were being cruel by keeping him cooped up in the small house but after reading all the posts have realized its not such a major issue after all.

Well my partner and i had a good long chat last night after a long night reading and replying to all your posts......im sure you will all be happy to know that we have decided to give him (and us) a chance, as he really deserves that at the least..... and when baby comes we will just go with it from there hopefully with advice from ppl on here regarding the baby issues!!

as a reply to the above post ... We do leave him a couple of toys usually. Just his Tuggy or a ball but he doesnt seem to be too interested in them to be fair and the majority of his toys he destroys in a few days.

He is off the leash when we get to the field and he is fine. Obviously getting to the field we have to walk 10 mins on lead which can sometimes be a struggle but something that is slowly improving, but nowhere near safe enough for my partner to do. Also its taking its toll on my back lol

Once we get to the field he is a joy and we play with the ball and he has a good 45 mins - 1 hour off lead running around, playing with other dogs, jumping in the brook. Then I usually put him back on the lead and do heel training, Halts , sits etc on the way home once he has let off his steam and he is a real dream on the lead then.

Obviously this is easier to do now the lighter nights are here but when im working its not so easy to take him to a boggy field in the pitch black for an hour when i get home at like 6pm.

That's really good news

With regards to toys - have you thought about leaving him with "boredom buster" toys, like Kongs and the like? That way he can spend say half an hour getting the treats out of the Kong, but that will keep him occupied for that time, but also mentally work him, so he will want to sleep more, which again will pass more time.

With regards to walking - Whilst he is under training, have you tried using a head collar or harness to help with pulling? My youngest Harley is an absolute dream on the lead (we have had him from 3 months and I won't allow him to pull, so now he is 6 months, he doesn't even try pulling), however, my 4 year old GSD Jess is a NIGHTMARE on the lead. We rescued her at 20 months, and she hadn't been taught anything. When we walk her, we have to walk her on either the harness or the head collar, just for safety as she has managed to pull me over 3 times and I'm not the smallest of people hehe.

So glad you have decided to give it a go
