RIP Harry Houdini

I haven't been on here for ages. I took Harry up for his annual vaccinations about 2 weeks ago and the vet found a tumour and he thought it was one of those rapid growing ones that could burst. I had an ultrasound done on him a week ago and we decided not to treat him and that it appeared to be normal.

Harry seemed so well yesterday - he went for a walk and had a steak supper. This morning I woke up and Harry couldn't stand up. He was panting really heavily and I knew it was him time.

I rushed him to the vet. Arch and Ella-Bella both gave him a kiss good bye. He passed very quickly in my arms with me looking into his eyes.

For those who don't know Harry's story in June 2009 I rescued him from a pound in New South Wales. I live in Queensland - it was like flying a dog from Spain.

He will in a terrible state, starving, fur missing and a fear of people. Over the last 16 months his fur grew back, he put on weight and regained his trust in people and other dogs. He was 13 when I saved him.

I loved him dearly. Run free my darling Harry at least you learnt what it was like to be a treasured pet rather than the hard life you had before.

Yes I think that was what it was called. It's a tumour that can burst suddenly and unexpectedly and is very common in gsds. The ultrasound didn't confirm it was this type of tumour but after what happened today - that's what we think it was - it grew so quickly. It wasn't there a few weeks ago.

He was such a fighter and last week the vet told me he was a real survivor and that we would know when it was time.

I'm still in shock - he was so well yesterday - wanted to go for a walk and really enjoyed his dinner - my husband cooked him steak.

I know I did the right thing but it doesn't make you feel any better.

As you say, so hard to do the right thing but it WAS the right thing to do. Sounds like after being rescued he couldn't of been loved any better, i'm sure the old fella was grateful for the care you gave him.
