La Princesa Polka
As I write this my baby Polka is lying sleeping by my feet. and she's never going to wake up again. The vet came round to our house a 9.30 this evening and put my poor baby to sleep. Yesterday her legs gave up- we had to lift her up to take her outside to toilet but she could hardly support herself- we held her back legs up with a harness. Last night I slept with her in the living room- she didn't move all night. Then this morning she couldn't get up- she wasn't even trying to-she was just lying there very peacefully. We had a vet's appointment at 11am so I tried to get her to stand using the harness, but her front legs couldn't support her and she fell back onto the carpet. So I went to the vets on my own and told him i thought the time had come for my baby. He said that the most likely thing was the cancer was affecting her nervous system as well. As I didn't want to move Polka again he agreed to put her to sleep at home.
So i've spent all day just sitting beside her, stroking her, watching her. She was really calm, she just lay there with her eyes closed- it was like her body was slowly shutting down.
When the vet and his assistant came Polka raised her head a little bit but couldn't do much more. And when they left my children came in to see Polka. it was very emotional for everyone-my 11 year old boy is especially affected.
When i told him that Polka lived the last months of her life surrounded by love he just said but 5 months in 7 years is nothing, and it's true but we loved her so much i hope it made up for all her unhappy times.
The vet said that we can either phone the local police to arrange to have someone take Polka's body away or there's a private firm that do cremations and then I can have my Polka's ashes back with me.
I don't know if this is the normal procedure- I thought the vet would take the body, but it has given us all time to be with Polka- she looks so peaceful I'm glad she went in this way.
Last week I posted a video of Polka on the beach- she went really down hill in the last couple of days, but in the end with her meds she wasn't in pain- she just lost all her strength.
The people at the animal shelter we got her from called her 'La Princesa Polka' she was the sweetest gentlest dog I've ever known. Just so sad that we had so little time with her.
Dulces sueños Polkita mi vida, te quiero.
RIP my wee baby girl xxx

Rest in peace Polka and you guys rest soundly knowing you gave her so much happiness even in a short time - I've shed a few tears for her and you and truly believe she will run free and have a ball waiting for you to get there with her again some day, call me daft but I believe it. Run free now little dog xx

So sad to hear that Polka has gone.
You gave her the best of times at the end of her life and ensured whe did not suffer, it may have been brief but it was certainly a wonderful time for her. Bless her heart. x
