Pound Dogs

I still go onto the rescue website where I found Harry. It focuses on senior dogs as they tend to be the ones that go onto the PTS list first due to their age.

Sadly when I logged on yesterday it was shocking news as the pounds in NSW (New South Wales) are absolutely overflowing today was a very big "kill day" and sadly many of the photos that were on there yesterday are now not there.

It truly is shocking and very sad to see a picture of a dog that has done nothing wrong who is abandoned and then PTS in a very short space of time.

I had a chat with my OH last night as we do have a permit for 4 - but how do you choose? Plus from a practical point of view I don't know if we could fit a fourth dog in the car.

I find it all very depressing to be honest. I really feel that until laws are brought in for compulsory de-sexing, puppy farms are shut down and back yard breeders banned that local governments have an obligation to look after these poor unwanted and quite often neglected strays. Maybe I'll have to sell up, move to the outback and set up and Australian version of Dogtown?

As they're in the pound for such a short time they don't receive any medical treatment.

So in memory of all the poor souls that were PTS today - spare a thought for them and lets hope that they are all running free at the bridge.

This is so so sad. I couldnt do it, i could not put a healthy animal like that to sleep. I am an equine vet nurse and i see horses being put down all the time, but with dogs i am just a useless wailing basket case when it comes to death. Having lost my precious girl GSD three days ago, this reminds me that i gave her a good life. She went away with us a number of times over the past ten years, slept inside (many dogs owners here in South Africa keep their dogs outside, never allowed into the house) and she loved her picked over roast chickens and white chocolate. She was a big chocolate monster, and we had to be so careful with her so we brougth white cadburys for the dogs. Ah i am rambling again. The tears keep coming and reading this has made me so very sad. But at least my girl didnt end up in a pound. I guess i am looking for every consolation in the book over her death.

Breaks my heart the number PTS always more at Christmas. kennels full to overflowing. Send a donation for private boarding when I can to give them more time but its an impossible situation. Have had several rescue dogs myself, have one now. Always when I buy a dog I send a donation to a rescue kennel.
Its a sad and horrible fact that you cannot save them all.

Billy Sitch has a spectacular aura about
It is very sad and, unfortunately, happening all over the world

IMO There should be more rules and regulations in place to make dog breeding (infact any animal breeding) more difficult. The bloody KC, and their equivelants worldwide, should insist that relevant health screening should be performed on the parents of any puppys that they register.

Local councils should also prohibit (or at least monitor) dog breeding in their rental properties and social security should prosecute anyone on benefits making money from breeding and not declaring it as an income.

All puppys, whether pedigree or mongrel, should be traceable back to the breeder - tattooed (which is traceable back to the breeder) or microchipped (which isn't, but should be made traceable) before sale and they must be prepared to take the dog back during anytime in its life.

That's just a start as I need to step off my soap-box and make a cup of tea

I'm so sorry about the terrible loss of your girl. Like you've said - she was loved and treasured and had a wonderful life. I know it doesn't ease the pain - but I'm sure she would want to thank you for being such a wonderful companion.

Myself and my friends agreed not to give presents or send cards this Christmas. Instead we sent donations to dog rescue to help get dogs out of pounds and into private boarding to give them more time.
Breaks my heart the number PTS.
For every dog I buy the next one is always a rescue and I always send money to a rescue when buying a pedigree dog.
Nowhere near enough but at least some are saved.

I've done the no cards and presents but send a donation to charity with my friends for a few years now. Not only does it take the stress out of Christmas and getting presents you don't really want - at least the money goes to somewhere it can make a difference.

It is so sad about the number of animals that are being pts - unfortunately here in Australia it works out to be one every four minutes
