Help with harness

Hi guys,

I bought a harness to attach Jess to the seatbelt when we are in the car. The guy in the shop told us that you shouldnt put a harness on a pup as it turns their elbows out?? As it was just for use in the car it would be ok until she was bigger.

Firstly it takes 20 mins to get the bl**dy thing on her, she bites and rolls over and basically will not help at all when we try to put it on, i end up laughing and knackered with all the effort, she has it on for the outbound journey, after that I cant be bothered to go through it all again to put it on. What I want to know, is would it be ok to leave it on her or not for her walk. Shes 19 weeks old now. She doesnt really pull that much on the lead until we are getting near to home and she wants to get back so its not that much of a problem, but it seems daft to have the harness and go through all the effort putting it on to take it off when we get to our destination. We had an extendable lead for walks in the woods etc which she pulled on at the weekend and snapped?????

Do you think she would be ok with the harness or is the guy in the shop correct in what he says??

Many thanks

Never heard of that before!
I have always used a harness on my dogs when young teaching them to walk on the lead as I hate the pulling on the neck and never had any problems.

You need to be able to get a finger or two between the harness and the dogs body, so it won't do any harm to leave it on for the walk, I wouldn't however, leave it on if she is off lead in the forest because a mates dog got stuck and a branch was hooked through the bottom of the harness they only found him cos he was howling!

Can you get her to sit, and hold a treat through the part of the harness that goes over her head then pop it on?
Or if it is the one that you have to put the legs through then lie it out on the floor and stand over her and place her feet in the holes then grab it and do it up quick?

Tried gettting one of those damn things on a 10stone rottie?! Lol I went out and bought one that had clips to fasten at both sides and did it while he was standing.

Sorry but at her rolling over when you are trying to get the harness on

I don't leave mine on for walks, don't use harnesses at all. Maybe they are a different fit than the walkies ones? Harnesses are ok for bubbas but maybe just not the car ones? Sorry don't know but you really made me chuckle

hahah well im happy you got a chuckle out of it if you'd have been there youd have thought it was hilarious, I had to sit down for 5 minutes to get my breath back. This type of harness can also be used for walking too apparently, i am going to have to leave it on her after our next car journey, i was worried about doing any damage after what they guy in the pet shop said. He also had trouble getting it on her in the shop as they fitted it on to her, well she chewed on his arms and rolled on her back too, she thought it was a great game, she gets a glint in her eye now everytime i get it out. I try to lay it into position so I know exactly what bit goes where but by the time ive eventually wrestled her to the ground to get it on, ive forgotten where all the bits go and what bit clips where!! Phew, surely they must make em easier to get on than this!!!!

The joys of puppyhood hahaha

I think they make them that complicated on purpose, I often end up with a mangled tangle of leads + clips

I was once so concentrating on getting harnesses on + had made them sit next to each other, Tilly was fidgeting + I ended up clipping one harness to the other

They were running around joined at the shoulder
