Shampoing

What with the recent wet weather and her long hair Diva is really in need of a good wash! We are planning on bathing her this weekend, and I'd like some advice on which shampoo to use ie Pet Shop bought Dog one or will a baby shampoo do? Also how often should a puppy be bathed? Cheers

Personally i wouldn't bathe a puppy with shampoo as it will affect the natural oils in the coat. Can make them itchy as it dries the skin too.

Neither of my dogs have been shampoo'd and they don't smell. Once when Zee had cow poo on her i had to clean her off with the hosepipe.

For general mud etc use warm water and a sponge to clean off any undercarriage, towel dry. Where you do this is up to you... for mine it's outside on the patio, not my bathroom!

If you really need to wash & just rinsing won't do, then a mild puppy shampoo. But mix it with water before you use it so it doesn't get all concentrated in one spot & cause irritation. I try to bathe pups as little as possible.

I would use a puppy shampoo, Diesel is only shampooed once a year tbh and I use a mild shampoo for sensitive skin.

we had to shampoo Marley when we first got him as he absolutely stunk of puppy wee.we used watered down johnsons baby shampoo and he is still here with no problems 3 weeks later.
don't think we'll make a habit of it though as we also believe as little as possible to keep his natural oils.
our border terrier however is a different kettle of fish he loves to roll in anything that he can so we have to bath him sometimes if we can't get rid of the smell with wipes!

Thanks all for the advice, very helpful! We do not want to make a habit of bathing Diva too often either but she is starting to 'smell' a bit and her fur is getting a bit caked - she loves rolling in the wet grass or mud!!! Mayeb she is trying to tell us something..Bless her!

Baby shampoo is ok for pups as it's ph balance is good. Puppy shampoo is fine and yeh dilute them in a bottle and use that to get the whole body and evenly. Just make sure you rinse it well and get all out from the under side (belly and groin as these are areas often forgotten)

To get the coat wet start from the back and work towards the head, if the head needs washing please fold the ears down to avoid water in the ears and hold the nose up when washing around the muzzle to avoid water gettin in the lungs, then when rinsing was from head back and down to avoid soapy water being put through already rinsed coat.
Also pick the feet up and make sure they are thoroughly rinsed as well

Sheps should be washed no more than every 10-12 weeks

Also, remember that as soon as a dog's head gets wet it will want to shake, so do the head last!

Hi,

I know it's been a while since this thread was posted on but thought it easier to post again rather than start a new thread. I'm thinking of giving Ciara a bath tomorrow but I was wondering what shampoo to use? Is there any that anyone would recommend inparticular? Her coat is lovely at the moment so don't want to lose a lot of the oils but she is starting to smell a bit grubby and I read some great advice on another thread about it getting rid of some loose fur while she is shedding.

Also, is it better after bathing to wait until the coat is fully dry before brushing her?

Not looking forward to getting her to behave in the bath while the shower is spraying her, much too exciting not to try and catch the water lol

If I've missed another thread about this then I would be happy to be directed to it, I did search first before posting but may have missed something
