Toilet training help

Hi,
as some of you already know we've just got a new pup lexi, shes 7 weeks old.
im not expecting miracles but trying to train her to go to the toilet on newspaper for now. but i dont think im doing something right.

ive got newspaper down in the 2 rooms downstairs that shes got the run of. i can tell now when shes about to do something and obviously by the timing ive got an idea when shes due, so i watched her before as i knew she needed a poo. i put her straight on the paper and said go on good girl, but she started crying and scuffling off the paper until i let her go. so she tried to go again on the carpet and i put her straight back to the paper, and she cried and scuffled again to get from off the paper. as soon as she got back onto the carpet she did a poo and i put her on the paper kind of half way through.

ok its only her 2nd day here and im not expecting her to know already, but i dont feel im doing it right, its like shes scared of sitting or standing on the paper. yet if its a fresh peice she will lie on it happily, which ive now stopped her doing because i hear she wont go to toilet where she sleeps.

has anyone got any advice or had the same experience

thanks

Awwwww bless ya, it's not easy at first. I think you are better off putting her outside rather than on paper, as first you will be training her to go on paper, then training her again to go outside

They will go when they have just woken up + when they have eaten. Straight after one of those, put her outside + praise her when she goes. She'll soon get the hang of it, but don't expect miracles overnight.

Patience is the key, + never scold her if she does go indoors, she'll soon learn

Good luck + let us know how you are getting on xxx

are you still holding her while trying to get her to go? She won't want to go pee/poo if your holding onto her.

I had puppy pads for Bonnie which she took to after a day or two of putting her on them in the middle of going but after a week she ripped them to bits so started her on outdoor toileting, we made the biggest fuss of her when she went so she very quickly realised if she went she would get praise and treats

Good luck, it takes time, trial and error! You'll get there soon enough xxx

Don't bother trying to train her to go on paper as you will only have to re-train. Take her outside as soon as she wakes up, after food, after playing and every time she starts sniffing around. You must stay with her and not just put her outside. Use whatever command you choose I say "go pee" or "be quick" and be sure to give her lots of praise when she performs. I am afraid to say that for the next few weeks you will not be able to relax and watch TV as you will be in and out every half hour or so throughout the evening - keep a coat and shoes by the back door as you can bet that some of the times you take her out she will think you are going to play out there and you may have a wait a while for her to do anything and then just when you give up and take her back inside she will do it on the floor! Just be patient and consistent, praise her when she does anything in the right place and ignore any mistakes for now. When she is a bit older if you catch her in the act indoors you can correct her with a "no" or "Ah ah" and immediately take her outside - with a bit of luck the "interruption" will mean that she will perform outside and then you can give her lots of praise. Is she going to be crated at night? I have found that this really helps with house training as pups are usually reluctant to soil their bedding.

Yeah i was holding her, but only because if i didn't she ran straight off the paper. I think your right as of tomorrow morning im going to start outdoor toilet training right away. Should i still leave any newspaper down inside incase of accidents? Or will that confuse her, and i should just get rid of the paper altogether?

Lol little minx

I would get rid all together but make sure you clean up any areas where she has done the toilet as she will be attracted to the scent and keeping going there! A quick wipe won't do it, you will have to get yourself a good cleaning solution for it.

As a rule I never cleaned up any of Bonnies mess in front of her, I always took her out of the room.... Just something I was told to do with her

TBH with Indi she only had paper for the first two days.
I use one are only in the garden and tell her a command of "be clean" and she only now goes in that place.
As mentioned its all about watching for the signals

Good luck

Thanks just a quickie whilst shes asleep and ive got 5 minutes to sit down but shes had 3 wee's in the garden today and done nothing in the house!! First step but im still so proud of her. Have just been and bought some cleaner from the pet shop to completely eliminate the smells on carpet so whilst shes asleep thats my job now! Fingers crossed!
