nibbling

Hi is there anything i can do to try and get chip not to nibble on the son. I know chip is only 7 weeks but my son is only 1 and I am doing my best in trying to keep chip from jumping on him and nibbling him but my son does encourage him by going over to him all the time. I need help.

You need to distract Chip with something he can nibble on like a bone or a toy and then praise him for doing this....

I would also be teaching Chip the 'leave' command so if you see him being too rough with your son you can ask him to leave.

I would definitely get a crate for the pup. When he is in there it has to be his space and he must not be disturbed.

A young child can easily fall on the pup and either hurt them or the pup may retaliate and bite the child.

With a one year old and a pup you cannot always watch them 24/7 - at some point you have to take your eyes off them - even for a second and that is all it takes sometimes.

I would also teach the 'leave' command - to both child and dog!!

All good advice. I am afraid the pup will be nibbling for a good few weeks yet until they learn they cant. It is notoriously difficult to stop.

We do have a crate for Chip he uses it for sleeping ect. I dont let any of the kids go near the crate if my son tries to go near it when Chip is in there I always move him away. I have been giving chip toys instead my kids but he is being persistant with the nibbling. I never leave my kids alone with the dog just because I am worried in case he nips to hard. Would it be ok to give Chip a bone as he is only 7 and a half weeks be 8 this thursday I was thinking of a bone but wasnt sure if he was to young for a bone. Thanks again

You can give them uncooked bones but sometimes it upsets their tum, not all dogs though.

You have to stay consistent, GSDs are smart and will learn very quickly if you stick to the same method...xx

I wouldn't give a pup that age a bone. I'd stick to the nylabone teething rings/bones as they are designed to help teething & to satisfy the chewing urge.

You have to be consistant. Choose which method you are going to use & stick with it. I've always used a long, low "Nooooo!" and then turned away and ignored until they're calm again, but there are other ways.

We have a similar problem but we have the crate.

My son is nearly 3 and he wants to play with Kora. So she gets excited and jumps and mouths (eventually). My son won't learn to pick a toy up instead favouring putting his hand in the way. So when playtime starts getting a little rough they are seperated into different rooms. Kora gets her crate and a chew style treat (pigs ear, pork rind or pizzle) and she generally calms down. However it all kicks off in a circle again as soon as the pair of them get together again.

Kora is 11.5 weeks now and it doesn't seem to be dying down much, but I feel there is a small improvement. Just when you are in the thick of it I think it's hard to see the improvements.

I am working hard on my son to turn his back, grab a toy and ultimately me breaking the game up between them. I don't know how i'd cope with a 1 year old as Ethans attention span is shorter than Kora's and he's almost 3!

I very rarely get on here now as soon as I am home I am straight into play with the pair of them and take them to the park!!
