....walking....

...had a semi-good walk today....last night was another story.....Sheba is still biting the lead, and biting hands and arms when out walking...have changed walks,as this was only initially happening when going to the same park/route...... when walking, I stop immediately when this happens, having no interaction/eye contact....last night the biting lasted for 15 mins...I think I could have been out until midnight waiting for the behaviour to subside....my hands look like they have been in a warzone....the initial biting starts with over excitement at the start of a walk....however she also does this throughout a walk...does anyone have any further suggestions....

GobbySchäferhund is a jewel in the rough
Only thing that i can add, is let her carry one of her toys around on the walk, it worked with Jess and then eventually i took the toy off her and she did not bite

Keep us posted on the progress!
How old is your pooch by the way?

You could change the lead to a chain one, they don't really like to bite metal but you do need to keep up with the biting stops all walking and fun, yes it can take forever but once she realises you aren't giving in she will

Maybe try the toy on walks as DOJ has already mentioned and the chain lead is worth a go as well but with mine (and everyone is different) ignoring didn't help but a sharp NO did.

All good ideas mentioned so far but instead of using NO, this is a word that our dogs hear from a very young age try using DON'T, very short and sharp and look like ya mean it

Hi, right i hope this doesn't cause trouble but i would grab the scruff and overpower untill she lets out a squeal and then release immediately, ok ok a pin down of sorts! don't shout just a non threatening dominent response.

How old is she?

Ermmmmmmmmmmmm Why would you do this?

What would you hope to gain from doing it???

Have you tried tiring her brain out before a walk???? A training session in the garden, hiding toys or food in the garden or house etc may help.
Does she get any mental stimulation during the day other than what she gains from a walk?
Is your garden big enough for 10 mins of ball play, then a calming session, then her walk?
Does the excitement start when the lead comes out?

Archie used to do that.

We got a short chain leash, and he stopped pretty much straight away. There's nothing worse than a mouthful of cold, pinchy chain.

He just gets walked on a leather leash now, although if he's feeling cheeky he might take it in his mouth. Usually a stern "no," fixes it though.

I switched to a chain lead for a while when Kira did this as a pup. Also at the end of a walk she used to start jumping up, biting the lead and being a real pain it stopped when I stopped giving her any eye contact- I would ignore her and not pay her any attention. Now she's not a pup, on the rare occasion she does this she gets a sharp ENOUGH and that sorts it.
