NO Fetch
Goooood Morning All
I have just got back from taking Jess for a walk, Now what i notice is when we are in the garden she wil fetch items all day long without questioning me.
Now when i take her out and tell her to fetch, she will only chase the item and then leave it??? Why does she not fetch when we are out???I do give her lots of praise and high value treats when we do this in the garden and if she brought them back on walks i would also treat/praise her the same.
Any ideas??
But Jess says noooooooo??

Probably partly a confidence thing and of course there are other distractions away from home. Generally speaking the phases of training a dog are: - 1. Familiar place without distractions, 2. Familiar place with distractions, 3.Unfamiliar place without distractions, 4. Unfamiliar place with distractions. Jess is still very young and at the moment you are utilising her play/chase drive to get her to retrieve items rather than an exercise that she has been taught. In obedience terms a properly trained dog will retrieve any item in any situation but you cannot expect a young dog to perform in this way.

I would guess that in the garden she is bored, and so will play the only game in town,... when she is out, there are far more better things to do,...she chases because that is fun,.. but once its caught,..off to new smells she goes
Try having two items to throw, [ I think sticks are dangerous ] throw the one, when its caught, raise the second, chances are she will return ready for the next,..weither she will bring back the first I dont know

Poly used to do this but with perserverance she will now I have switched back to her language 'bringen' just now need to stop dropping it near me and running back out waiting for me to throw - if she drops it I tell her to hold then give and treat

Thanks all for the comments, we have a varity of toys which i throw when playing fetch, she really does love it in the garden but not on walks.
Our play walk is in the same field everyday with no distractions she will sit and wait forever for me to throw it but after chasing it down she will just leave it and come back to me

Something I do with mine is for me to chase them with the toy - they love that, then you'll find they'll come to you with it because they want you to chase them again. So when they're near with the object you work on the drop or dead command for the release.
Zee's good at fetch and will bring it straight back to me. Remus will run around with it a bit first and then bring it back. He will also intercept the game by trying to grab the ball before you've thrown it.. durr!
