Confused :(

Hi everyone,

Rio is now 18 weeks and growing bigger and stronger by the day bless her! We weighed her at the vet on Friday and she was 20.2kg - vet said she looked perfect.

The reason for my confusion is that she hadn't been eating her food properly for about 3 days, just picking at it and not really eating much of it at all(Royal Canin Maxi Junior and Nature puppy food) so we decided to change her wet food to see if that would bring her appetite back and jeez was I right!! We went to Sainsburys and the only wet one they do is Pedigree Chum puppy food. I know you will probable say thats no good but it must be ok to meet the standards to sell it and also I am only giving her a small amount of this as she has 3 scoops of her Royal canin biscuits. We started giving her this on Saturday night and she has been eating up every single bit of it when we put it down, such a difference in the other stuff as she absolutely loves this and its nice to see her eating properly again.

I know a change in their diet can cause an upset tummy and thats whats happening as her poo is now extremely loose. Its been loose since Sunday morning but saying this, her poo has ALWAYS been loose. Not solid but not watery either, in between. But now they are very watery.

Should I be worried? How long do you think she will be having loose poos for? Should I feed her rice and chicken today but I'm reluctant to as thats another change of food within 2 days.

Please help...!

JWB is a far better choice in my opinion James well beloved & shouldn't be any need to suppliment a kibble..
also
skinners field & trial puppy

feeding is usually the amount per day divided by the the times fed.. but you may need to drop the amount from that suggested by manufactures
could be overloading.. dont forget your adding to the source..

Tedsmum will become famous soon enough
I had exactly the same problem when my dog was a pup. He was and still is reluctant to eat dry food but will eat tinned food very happily. I used Butchers choice tins and a bit of biscuit. I find that my dog does not tolerate biscuits or mixer very well and it is that which gives him the runs if he has too much. If he eats the tinned food only he has very solid poos.
Unless she appears to be ill, I would give it a couple more days and see if she improves. If it is very runny or she is lethargic then I would go on to chicken and rice and gradually introduce the new diet into that, literally a desert spoon at a time.

Diesel went off JWB and refused to eat for 3 days and has had upset tums so I know what it's like to struggle to find something for them, you do need to ensure that if you change over any food you do it slowly.

Personally I feed Orijen 6 Fish, this is a fab food and my lad's tum is so much better, I have to say I'm not a Pedigree fan.

If her stools are still loose after a few more days I would stop feeding that food, give her a bland diet and try something else.

How much tinned do you feed?

It might be that reducing the tinned down to a couple of chunks might be enough to get her to eat the dried but avoid the runs..

With Ellie two chunks of tinned meat is the difference between getting the very dispondent disgusted look of 'what no meat you can't be serious' and happily tucking into her meal..

Oh I forgot to mention Jess is on Wag ( Working dog Food ) even though she is unemployed lol, some people like it some dont, thats the case with everything though lol.

I was only feeding her 1 large meal a day but since reading up about bloat i have split it into two meals a day ( 2 large beakers of dry mix & 1 normal tin of pedigree chum x2 a day ) Sometimes with an egg mixed in.

Also once or twice a week i will change the tin of pedigree chum for a large tin of tuna of cooked mince beef.

And treats aswell, and left over sauasges, bacon, blackpudding when ever i leave breakfast which is very rare

The only thing I'd add is because she's very young, + in this hot weather, dehydration is also a consideration, so important she gets plenty of fluids x

Hi everyone, thanks ever so much. By the sounds of it I think I was feeding her too much of the pedigree chum tin to be honest.

For lunch today I gave her plain boiled rice with chicken and I used 1 teaspoon of the chum to give it a bit of flavour. She absolutely wolfed it down!!

I've made her some more for tonight so fingers crossed.... Xxx
