Spayed?

Hi all, Rio's mummy here!

Rio is now 5 months old and I was just wondering what the earliest age is for getting her spayed? She's not hit her first season yet but was just wondering what the best age is? Xx

I think it's best to let them mature and have at least two seasons JMO. The vets try to persuade you to have it done at 6 months I feel this to be too early unless there are medical grounds for doing so! I am sure you will get a lot more others helping you with this . xx

Hi there are a lot of different opionions on when to spay but I think you will find most people on here would at least wait until she has had her first season. Some would advise after two seasons.
It has to come down to a personal choice in the end and the advice of your vet. x

Bonniesmummy is a jewel in the rough
I asked the same Q on here, many moons ago now it seems and got a very mixed response. Some will agree with the vets and say have it done around 6mths old, before they have a season as there are benifits to their health apparently but IMO I strongly believe that you should let them have at LEAST 2.

I decided to wait until Bonnie had a season against the advice of the vet and think it was what was best for her... she certainly matured after her 1st and I only wish she had another one before spaying but due to phantom pregnancy and advice given we had her spayed a few months after her 1st season.... I can only say that I honesty believe she would have matured even more and benifited greatly from another one.

What is right for some people may not always be right for another so its really your choice and what you believe to be right for your girl. Try not to get to bombarded with information either I think the maturity levels outweigh the health risks, as to me that is all they are... risks! whos to say they will get any of the problems because of not spaying.

Good Luck hunni xxx

When/if she has a season you just need to try and walk her where no dogs are around and never let her off lead. In the latter of the 3 weeks (ish) of season I kept Bonnie in the garden so as not to have her scent all over the place and annoying all the males and also to make double sure she wouldnt get 'caught'.

The season isn't that hard to deal with as they pretty much take care of themselves so if that's your biggest worry I wouldn't stress so much about that

Link will be spayed after her second season.
I want her to mature fully as my last bitch was spayed at 6 months and had many health problems.
My vets adice is also to spay at 6 months.

There's mixed evidence. Some owners report no difference with an early spay before maturity. Each season increases risks of mammary and uterine tumours. From the research I read there wasn't significant risk of spaying between 1st and 2nd season for behavioural and physical problems (incontinence); more so with an early spay though.

My vet advised spay after 1st season if bitch was mature enough, so if bitch had early season then wait for 2nd so they're mentally and skeletally mature.

I too would let her have 2 seasons. jmo.
She wont have every dog after her.
As she will only be out at safe times,( early mornings and late nights ) on lead.
As ' she ' could be after the boys the second week.
Our girl was mostly in our secure garden, always with us, playing to keep her happy.
Hubby took her out on lead, as I say mornings and evenings.
They keep their selves clean.
Dont worry, it's just common sense really, just look out for her.
Good luck, with you'r baby.

There is a pretty mixed response to this question..

I'm the more traditional view point, as least one season if the first season is around a year old, if under a year then two season's.. Looking for the dog to be 14+ months before spaying!

I feel that if it's a smaller breed who reach maturity a lot quicker spaying pre-season is too bad, but for larger breed dogs such as ours who don't mature until well after 1 years old, then waiting for the seasons to start you know that they've reached a certain level of maturity where spaying is suitable.. Preseason you are spaying a baby.. And to me the health benefits that are said to be gained isn't enough to justify spaying a baby...

There is a member here who's not long had their dog spayed at the 6 months, perhaps they will say what their experience is so far..
