Adjusting to a Crate
Hi Everyone,
I have decided to get Zak a crate tomorrow from the local Kennel gate. I was going to borrow one from my cousin but we have decided the Crate is going to be forever and not just 6 weeks as we have no kitchen worktops or doors left.
The one I have seen looks huge and has 2 doors, I am also going to get him a couple of different bedding incase he has an accident (Hope he doesnt)
Zak has never been in a crate so I am not so sure he will like the idea.
I am thinking of getting him some nice new toys and treats and putting them in the crate and hope he likes it.
Has anyone got any tips?

Zandi had never been in a crate untill his op, i just put him in when i got him home, he was on tramadol so just went to sleep, every time he had a toilet break i gave him a treat for going back into the cage, i also gave him bones etc to keep him occupied, after about a week he happily went and after recovery if cage door open he would go in and lay down

Just put some really nice things in there & let him come & go when he likes with the door open. After a while, just close the door for a few seconds & then open it again. Gradually increase the closed times.
Most dogs (not all) will get used to a crate very quickly & will choose to go in there when they want some peace & quiet.
Whenever we have someone round (especially my daughters friends) Dempsey slopes off & lays in his crate. Everyone is under strict instructions that he is to be left in peace when he does this, so he knows it's his 'safe' place, his den.

Put some old piece of clothing that has your smell on, and put it in the crate when you are not there,... and covering the crate, makes it more `den like`, some dogs like that, it makes them feel more secure

I found that a Kong filled with Peanut butter worked every time
Rogue never really took to her crate though, but my last dog did and it was a godsend!
As long as its a happy place for the dog, he'll be happy in it!
