Drinking

No not me!

How much roughly (I know it will vary with weather etc) should an almost 5 month old pup be drinking?

I regularly refil the water bowl for Olli and today he has easily drunk 3 litres.

As he's fed on kibble I'd imagine he needs a little more water but surely 3 litres is a little excessive?

It may be that I just haven't noticed before now that he's drinking that much.

Is he generally a greedy dog?
I have noticed that some pups tend to be greedy with food AND water until they mature snd will just keep drinking until they are full.

Yes he is a gannett! He's had his full quota of kibble and managed to get through an entire chicken breast plus other treats at puppy training this evening.

He's also teething so I guess he could be using the cold water as a cooling aid - been giving him ice cubes too which he also loves.

I think that's your answer then.
He may well grow out of it and if he seems healthy and has plenty of energy otherwise, I would not worry too much.

My last SBT was diabetic + he drank gallons

For me it would be worth a blood test to rule out diabetes

Is he tired or does his rear end tend to give way sometimes?

There are loads of other symptoms, but if you think he's drinking a lot then get a blood test done

We got Ellie at 5 months old, and boy did she drink polish of a bowl at a one drinking session no problems.. Never measured how much she drank though but it did calm down when she got to around 7-8months old..

If he's diabetic he would be peeing almost as quick as he drunk, but you can sort of do a primary rule out of this yourself.. Ask your chemist for some urine glucose testing strip under a £5'er for 50.. The collect a sample and follow the instructions, if your find glucose in the urine then contact your vets as he's probably diabetic.. Far cheaper than vet's consultation and blood test..

And if warm wether/kibble increasing fluids then he won't pee more than normal..

Thanks for the replies folks, it would seem that yesterday was just a thirsty day for Olli as he's not drank anywhere near as much today.

I guess until I learn Olli's ways and foibles things are going to seem random to me.

Funny beasts they are!
