Straight back? Sloped back? Hip Scores? West German Lines? etc. etc.

What a minefield it is learning about German Shepherds?!!!

There's a lot to know, but a lot of it is fairly easy to understand. The straight/sloped back thing is a bit misleading cause a lot of the so-called sloped-backed dogs only have a sloped back because of the way they are stood for the show ring!

If you have any specific questions, though, or if you don't understand something then Pam (Wildmore) is the one to ask! She's an invaluable fund of knowledge!

(sorry to embarrass you, Pam!)

This is my Zandi 100% West German show line -what you would term as 'sloped backed' not in stance

Two more gorgeous dogs. Oh my goodness. Will have to get my catsuit out and climbing gear ready. lol

Interesting about the 'sloping back'. I read that they were bred that way.

It's the way the rear legs are angled in the show stance that gives them a sloping back. The biggest problem is over-angulation of the rear legs which would lead to weakness.

Here in Queensland the gsds look positively deformed. The backs of most gsds bred here look awful and having had a dog with HD I can see it in most of them.

When we were going to get a pup we were going to get one from New South Wales and in fact are still on a wait list for a pup from an amazing breed-line - although we won't be getting one now as we are up to our 4 dog permit.

Someone also told me (and I'm hoping it's an urban myth) that some less reputable breeders tie a brick to the end of puppies tails to get the sloped back effect in the show ring.

What I have noticed here is for those dogs AKC registered and are with the state gsd associations do have high standards in respect of hip and elbow scores in order to register them. A dog from a good breeder costs $1500 AUD upwards.

Gsds unregistered from bybs are around $600 AUD
