which 1 of the 8 pups do i choose

Hi, i have just put down a deposit for a long haired GSD out here in Canada and i would welcome any advice to which one of the eight due pups to choose from.
I have decided to go for a male and I would prefer to have the one that is going to be the largest and strongest looking when it grows into an adult.
I realise that it would be very difficult to determine which one is best for me at this young stage but i just wondered if there were any unwritten rules i.e Do i go for the one that has greater width of the shoulders or the size of its paws etc.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
D

Hi,

Crikey, I certainly wouldn't recommend you take in a so called 'dominant' puppy, ESPECIALLY if this will be your first GSD!!!

Be under no illusion, this breed can be and are hard work if you aren't aware of what you are doing, if you've never owned a dog before a GSD could be considered a brave choice. They are wonderful and loyal, but you need to make sure you actually choose the pup that shows indifference. If in any doubt at all you could ask the breeder if they have temperment tests done on the pups, this way you can decide on the results. This is carried out here in the UK with SOME breeders, but not sure about Canada!

I would imagine, thinking of size, alot will depend on just how big the parents are. Is there a particular reason why you want the biggest? As I can honestly tell you it really doesn't matter, what you take home will be your mate for life, and I'm sure the personality of any you take on will far exceed it's physical size!

Jo I agree with you, I would never pick the most pushy or dominant puppy and equally I wouldn't choose the meekest puppy either. I think you want to pick one in the middle

As for size it's so hard to tell, Diesel's father was a large long haired GSD and his mum a short coated average size bitch and he grew into a leggy slightly above breed standard in height and quite lean GSD....you just never know how they'll end up. I personally don't think size matters it's their nature that interests me more.

Good luck with choosing your new addition and come back to post pics and show him off.

Lynn
