Yes certainly the left side, its safer for the dog, and you, he is away from traffic and you can stop any lunge towards the road,..I would never walk a dog on my right,..I walk all three Shepherds on my left

Its up to you really, there are no hard and fast rules unless you wish to obedience?
I walk one on each side, Del on my right as my right shoulder isn't up to JL's occassional mad moments.

I'm obviously really stupid but why? If you want to walk your dog on the right and keep it on the inside away from traffic doesn't it make a difference which side of the road you are on anyway???

I soo cannot walk the dogs on the right, soooo does not feel right, but like you said its what you feel comfy with xx
I think from your last post I would say its because of OB training, its something I have always done with my dogs, lol I even walk my cats on the left..........don't ask

Of course you are not stupid, its a fair question,..I supose if you were to walk what is normally against the flow of traffic then your dog is into the side if its on your right, there is no hard and fast rules, so I cant answer against it
Except that its normally the `way it is done`, if you go to any classes that is what you are taught
Though on a slightly off shoot to the question, I have to walk with them on my left, because we live in an area that only has narrow single track roads, if my dogs were on my right they would be in the middle of the road,... and it would not be a good idea to do it any other way

I thought the 'left' theory wrt to OB came from something to do with the military and most soldiers being right handed so holding their weapons in the right hand and thus held the dog on the left. Wonder where I got that from?!

As a dog trainer myself i always say to my clients you can have ur dog where u feel most confident with most go with them on the right hand side tbh due to how i teach them and that being there strongest arm i do not use cross the body techniques as thats higher obedience level and since there normal dog pets this seems to be perfect 4 them.
As for me my boy he has always been on my right hand side i only hold the leash with one hand or two fingers and he walks perfectly so its up to u really there is no written rule imo.
