Eating his own faeces!

Bobby has settled in extremely well he is nearly 9 weeks old. He loves his crate and is using the puppy mats for pee and goes outside in the garden to do his other business.

What we have noticed is that once he goes to the toilet he then proceeds to eat it!! He is on Royal Canine Junior 4 times a day. I put yoghurt on his food morning and night as advised by the breeder who has fantastic healthy GSD's. I took him to the Vet and he is happy with the food I am feeding Bobby and also his weight gain he thinks he might have an upset stomach. This is probably from him picking up and trying to chew everything he finds in the garden. This only started since he started going out into the garden.

I wondered if anyone else had experienced this?

Yes its very common this behaviour.

My Bo did this when he was a wee pup, yucky hey....

All I did was pick it up as soon as he did it, & to be honest this is what I do all the time now with all my woofers, I find it much easier.

Funnyily enough, Bo was on Royal Canin baby dog when he tried this game.

Firstky what sort of yoghurt are you feeding?
It shouldnt be cows milk yoghurt
Goats milk yoghurt is great and sheeps milk yoghurt even better when its in season
Try adding a little pineapple to his dietThis should stop him from eating it

You are not alone. The amount of young dogs I have seen doing or attempting to do this is amazing.

Dogs are not put of easily by smell, and what may be unappealing to us may be very appealing to them. My dog also did this when a pup.

Be firm, say no and push him away and clear it up before he has chance to nibble at it. He will soon get the idea and grow out of it.

I think we should put this on the forum homepage it gets asked so often!!!

Sami is 12 and she loves nothing better than a good bit of poo, sometimes hers and sometimes others she finds on her walk. She is quite selective of course she doesnt eat just any old poo she has to sniff out the right one!!

She is still demanding "nice" food after her poorly spell and if I dont give it too her she asks to go out and eats some poo if she can find any. I swear she is doing this deliberately!!! I dont care what you lot or any other expert tells me about how intelligent dogs are or they dont have the "spite" emotion I SWEAR she is doing it on purpose to piss me offf!!!!

Remy used to do this all the time when he was still with us, we tried the pineapple thing and he seemed to enjoy it more, as others have said the vet wasn't concerned as long as we knew where it had come from.

Regards

Ian
