GSDOWNER will become famous soon enough
Are you the owner of a poorly dog..............

A Dogs life is running a campaign to halt the sale of sick pups accompanied by false pedigrees. If you have bought a sick pup from a pet shop, dealer or breeder which has suffered from a recurring illness please contact A dogs life either email or telephone, you will be treated with strict confidence.

I brought a German Shepherd Dog in December 2004, in June 2006 he was diagnosed with having Hip Displasia/Arthritis, his brother has been diagnosed with Severe Hip Displasia and was diagnosed at 6mths old, he also has EPI

My breeder has breed our dogs mother twice since our litter, she also kept a sibling of my dog and has already had two litters (she is not yet 3 years old), my breeder has kept a sibling from my dogs sisters litter,

Get ready to start itching your head.....My dogs BVA scores have come back as 10.14=24, so it is a low score, but higher than the breed average which is 19 in the UK for the GSD breed...........but there are many more breeds out there suffering with HD, and we need to get a clearer picture

ok breaths

My vet first diagnosed George with having HD at around 15mths as he had become lame and xrays were taken, never sent them to the BVA, I had him rexrayed at my breeders vet practice in August who also diagnosed George having HD and he also broke the news that arthritis had began to show its ugly face

My dog has HD but has low Hipscores, there is nothing to stop me breeding my dog (apart from the fact he has been neutered)

So I am more confused than ever, I have two vets telling me that my dogs has HD/osteoarthritis, yet the BVA scores are telling me that he has not

Any dog that does not have a score of 0:0 has HD, whether it be mild, moderate or severe.

Not necessarily, anything above 1 in the Dorsal acetabular edge signifies definitive pathological changes associated with degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis), the smallest being minor exostosis, which is usually seen cranially.
Also scores in the Acetabular Fossa indicate detectable bone deposits and is always associated with marked subluxation and the amount tends to increase in proportion with the increase in the other radiographic hallmarks of secondary degennerative joit disease (osteoarthritis).
Scores in the Femeral head recontouring are usualy awarded only in cases in which secondary changes are well established, when remodelling occurs as a result of the combined effects of periarticular new bone formation and loss of subchondral bone following total destruction of articular cartilage.
So infact it would be possible for a dog to be scored a total of 34 and have no HD, but be due to degenerative joint disease under the BVA scheme.

Perhaps unregistered would read the gsdhelpline before breeding dogs;
'The lower the hip score the better the broad terms but they should look at the where points are scored and try not to use animals scoring over 3 in any one place and certainly not mate animals where both score high in the same features' GSDHELPLINE.
Also understanding what the 9 boxes on the BVA score are pertaining to, not just take the overall score into account.
