Article in todays Express

Reasonably good article in todays Express about Puppy Farming and how not to buy a pup from one:

Express.co.uk - Home of the Daily and Sunday Express | Express Yourself :: Scandal of the puppy farms

I find it horrifying that puppies are still sold at car boot sales in this country, I had thought that was illegal but obviously I was wrong.

At least they are raising the subject in a paper that many non doggy people will buy.

I saw this yesterday, like you say it's nice it's getting some coverage and I was also shocked that people sell pups at a car boot??

Trouble is, lots of people do buy them! One of my Jack Russells had a litter of pups and we went to a car boot sale and were walking around carrying the pups (didn't want to leave them alone!) and the number of people who came up and asked if they were for sale and how much they were was unbelievable!

Me neither - BUT then, if I saw some puppies and they were in a bad state I would feel so sorry for them that I would be tempted to buy them just to get them out of the situation.

I know it would be the wrong thing to do - but by the time you saw them you would already feel so involved with them and want to help them to safety.

How many people could walk away?

I really think that it should be illegal to sell any livestock at car boot sales. After all I thought that was why the Animal Welfare Bill was introduced, to prevent things like that?

I quite agree Sue,.. people say not to buy from bad sources, but by doing so many puppies are being `saved`, weither its right or wrong,.. it is very hard to walk away.

I know that if people didnt buy them there would be no farms, but its not really up to the public to stop all this, the public are often made to feel in some way quilty,... it needs the goverment to step in and close them down, make it a criminal offence, so the puppies are not there for sale in the first place

Sue that is exactly what sells the pups our feeling sorry and it works, in Southern Ireland it is rife on market day, Linda our friend brought a JR home when we were on holiday there a few years ago, they could not have been much older than 5 wks, she gave £40 for him...so sad

That is one reason I never go abroad on holiday - I just know that I would see a stray dog and get totally involved with it and want to bring it home and I feel that is so wrong (to import strays).

Thing is once people actually see and stroke an animal they are hooked and like you say that is exactly what sells the pups.

That is why it needs to be outlawed like Stuart says, only when you are totally detached can you actually do something about it.
