Angry New Laws in Wales

I saw this today on the BBC Wales website.
BBC News - Laws on 'puppy farms' tightened
It is definitely a step forward, but in my opinion is still a long way off making a big difference. There are just to many "back yard breeders" and those who are only interested in making a quick buck and don't really give a damn about the dogs.

Good step foward but how can BYB ever be completely stopped, there is always going to be someone who just doesn't care and breeds anyway

Boss at work get the countryside alliance magazine, and I happened to notice an article in there. This is what it says:

"Welsh warning for working dog owners

The Alliance is warning members in Wales that they could be affected by new legislation on dog breeding. New recommendations would redefine 'breeder' to include non-commercial breeders and all breeders would require a licence. For example, a 'breeder' would now include a person who keeps three or more unneutered bitches over six months old. There would also be a maximum number of dogs that could be kept per full-time 'attendant'. Local authorities in Wales will be responsible for enforcing the licence and inspecting the premises of licensed breeders. The proposals and the draft Guidance on Licence Conditions for Dog Breeders Incorporating Animal Welfare Act 2006 'Five Needs' is due to go out for consultation at the end of September. Anyone interested in dogs, especially working dogs, should respond."

It will be interesting to see if this gets put through, and how they will police it if and when the licence comes about. This is definitely the way forward as far as I can see.

I think this bit of the BBC report is terrible:

"Jade Anthony had to return her new puppy Charlie to the breeder.

Within hours of bringing the dog home, it became clear that there was a problem.

She said: "He was just so frightened.

"If you wanted to talk to him, you would have to go on your hands and knees in order for him to come close to you. He was absolutely petrified"

Why on earth return the puppy to the breeder? He will just be sold on to the next unsuspecting person.

If they cared anything for the poor pup they would have found a reputable dog rescue to take it.

It is people like this who keep the puppy farms going.

They probably paid a tidy little sum for him and wanted their money back, never mind what happens to the puppy afterwards!
