If you chase after them they just think its a great game The best thing to do (if you can) is turn and walk/run away. Most GSD's don't really like being left on their own and will run after you.

I always used to periodically hide whilst out on walks - it kept their attention on me. They never knew when I was going to disappear!!!

I once caught a woman's collie for her, she had been trying to catch it for over an hour and was really frantic. The dog just thought it was a great game. I had a pocket full of small pieces of cooked liver, got a handfull and threw them in the air so that they scattered all over the grass. Dog came forward to try and pick each tiny piece up and she was able to get hold of its collar. She had no treats/toys or anything - think she took some out with her after that!!!

Bonnie is being a right wee madame atm and really testing me, she is just NOT listening to commands that she KNOWS already.

Funnily enough, recently when outside in the garden and I call her in she has being giving me the deaf ear so Ive been like 'sod you, stay out there then!' and shut the door on her, next thing I know she is clawing at the door wanting in

Yesterday on our walk she saw a dog she knows when we came to the end of the walk, she wanted to go to it but I told her 'no' and to come back because the dog was near the road and she has no road sense what so ever well madame decided that she was going and thats that! so I said bye then and ran the other way, she came running after me lol

If I`m out with the boys alone I`ve got Spyke on a long line so I can get hold if I see someone coming. He won`t attack them but has a habit of bouncing up to see whats what so I prefer not to allow that. Braeden`s recall is always (so far so good) spot on. I tend to do what Sue suggested, I hide from the boys and they come sprinting up to find me, I always frequently call them to give praise or treats.

If Spyke decides to play funny awkward b**ger I turn my back, shout BYE SPYKE and walk away, he soon comes running up to me which allows me to stand on that long line

I have to say when Diesel was little OH & I used to randomly hide behind trees so when he turned round we were gone and he had to come back to look for us, we would then really fuss & treat him for 'finding us'....now Diesel will never ever be more than 12-15 paces ahead of us and will always look back.

I also whistle trained him for those 'deaf' moments....lol

I do the hiding thing too. Also I turn my back on them and run on the spot, so it looks like I'm running away - dogs clearly are rubbish at perspective!

On a night time walk I'll turn my headtorch off. Though that's a bit scary when you can hear them thundering towards you in the dark and all I can see are the flashy lights on their collars!

recall nightmare

Hi,
Not sure if this is an old topic or more recent, but just came across it while browsing.
Just to show some interest, here is what Terry Hadley once said with regard to the recall.
"With a young dog in the W/Trials C.D Stake,I would get marked 6/7,while others would score 8,9 and 10. Yet I would have the best recall. How can that be"?
Hope that is of interest.
Rod.....

Personally I always use the 'bye' technique as it always works, haha last time I hid, he couldn't find me and lied down on the ground and started howling, i popped up and he came tunneling towards me haha

I did and do exactly the same with mine.
Link has always had excellent recall and I want to keep it that way, I use a whistle too

Dexter has been a bit of a shithead with recall lately. I've been playing a game with him- letting him get up to 30 ft away then calling him to me in a really excited voice. when he comes back i then send him off in a "fun" way -ie. Lots of praise and noise and happy body language. He loves it, and it's helping.
