Recall nightmare

Indi out on a walk tonight off lead - recall fine with lovely return to liver cake and no issues until.........small Jack Russell comes from nowhere and then runs away...Indi gives chase through fences fields etc until i catch up with her (no harsh reaction) I tell her to come she does and thats it for a 30 minute chase!

What is everybody's strategy with recall?

Tedsmum will become famous soon enough
I tend to use a whistle for recall, especially good over long distances as it is easily heard by the dog and he seems to respond very quickly to it. Far better than bellowing accross a windy playing field like a fishwife.
Prime the whistle by blowing it and feeding a treat every time so that the dog associates the whistle with a treat.
He will return better to the whistle than to being called, so much so that I have had people ask me where I got the whistle from, like it is some kind of magic charm! (I got it from PAH by the way).

My friends daughter let her rescue dog out by mistake, my friend stopped her running after the dog (who was fast disappearing down the road), she just stepped out, raised her arm and shouted 'Bye Sam' and stepped back in and shut the front door. Two seconds later. opened the door and in ran Sam!!!

If you chase after them they just think its a great game The best thing to do (if you can) is turn and walk/run away. Most GSD's don't really like being left on their own and will run after you.

I always used to periodically hide whilst out on walks - it kept their attention on me. They never knew when I was going to disappear!!!

I once caught a woman's collie for her, she had been trying to catch it for over an hour and was really frantic. The dog just thought it was a great game. I had a pocket full of small pieces of cooked liver, got a handfull and threw them in the air so that they scattered all over the grass. Dog came forward to try and pick each tiny piece up and she was able to get hold of its collar. She had no treats/toys or anything - think she took some out with her after that!!!

Working on our recall, Jazmin has a 40/50 foot line on her always now. Great recall in the house and garden, but outside is far more fun things going on.Good luck with your little one,by the way our baby is nearly 22months old, so hope the penny drops soon, or my arms could look like a apes.Still we get there in the end (god willing).
