Obedience

Obedience
The number one reason dog owners give their dogs up for adoption is either the dog is destructive or uncontrollable. Both of these problems can be eliminated by teaching your dog obedience. Many dogs that end up at animal control would not be there if only their owners had spent a little more time teaching them a little obedience. It's a little easier with a young dog but it's never too late to start. I can not emphasize how important obedience is to any dog especially a German Shepherd Dog. There are different interpretations to obedience, one type of obedience is KC obedience trials, Schutzhund training, Agility training, Herding, these are for competition. Competition is not for everyone however all dogs need to have basic obedience training, the GSD is no exception. When you take home your little fuzzy puppy which does really cute things you have to understand that he is going to grow into a very large powerful dog. If you do not teach him what is acceptable and what is not he will become a problem dog. It is my recommendation that all dogs are enrolled in an obedience class at approximately 12-15 weeks of age, they will have had 3 sets of shots by now. GSD?s need the socialization of being around other dogs and people. GSD?s are working dogs and need the discipline of obedience training, without this they can be very destructive and unruly. A short period of time spent teaching your dog manners will give you a best friend that you can take anywhere and truley enjoy each others company. This time spent with your puppy will create a life long bond, which is priceless. Check with your veterinarian about who he recommends for puppy classes, or check your local newspaper many classes will be advertised and check with the person you purchased your puppy from.
