I think my thoughts on mouthing fly in the face of many peoples thoughts on the matter, most people have a no tollerance to mouthing, and try all ways to stop it,..I dont.

Depending on how hard of course, but in general I allow mouthing, a dog only has so many ways of communicating with us, mouthing is an important part of that communication, dogs do this between themselves,..to stop it is like stopping us saying so many words.

Again I stress that too hard is dealt with, but if mouthing in general is allowed then it is not often hard at all, if the dog knows it can use method, he has no need to do it hard

An example,..when I had Nero here, he didnt like his feet touched, so he would grab my hand remove it from him and release,..far better that than a nip
Our dogs mouth, they never nip or bite as they know it's not allowed. Nothing wrong with mouthing, but sometimes excitement takes over + it gets a bit rougher, then it has to stop

pamella is on a distinguished road
marley also did this.we also would say OUCH!!no teeth then promptly ignire him.
he does it now and again when excited-he is now 7mths.
hev had used to do it when he wanted to be let out before he learned to do a quietish bark that we recognise as 'i need to peepee'.
so is your gsd asking for something?
