Postie progress??
Lukey loses it when someone knocks at the door . I have been making him move to the other side of the room and sit/stay whilst I go to the door.
Today he heard a royal mail van (not delivering to us but close) and went and sat in 'his place' in a very alert sort of way.
I think he was anticipating the routine so I praised him. I will watch out and reinforce as I think instead of losing it I can train him to go sit in this particular spot when he hears a delivery van. Only trouble is that's OK when I'm in the room. Not sure he would bother barking if he was in the kitchen or in his crate.
I love this boy. I hope my life is a bit less complicated next year and I can give him more. He learns so quickly - it's me that's the numpty

Sounds like you are definately winning. I do sympathise, Del's biggest wish in life was to get the postman. He even recognised him out of uniform on the other side of the street............Over the xmas break I have some time off and am challenging myself to get both dogs to 'sit stay' beside me when I open the door to someone. This is going to be a challenge as while they don't bark at the door they both LOVE visitors. Have enlisted my friend who they both really adore to be my victim and stand on the doorstep while I basically slam the door in her face every time they break the stay

I cant remember how many times I have been asked to help out with dogs in this way while out delivering.
I have always carried biscuites, and most dogs I meet get them, but they have to earn them first
Ask your postie if he would help out, he may well do so,.. but dont keep him too long this time of year,..lol

 good idea Stuart
I should have added when he 'took up his position without being asked ) I went to the window to check then came back and praised him. I want him to know it's my house/window because he really can lose it and once knocked the television off the stand!!
Good luck with your two Faye, I'm sure you know more what you are doing with me. I just learn as I go along. They are fascinating dogs.
In the end it is good if they alert us to someone at the door, he is just too protective. I do have a friend who would help me out with the training though, acting as a 'door knocker' - then he will go to her for boisterous cuddles and he smells of perfume all day

Brilliant, well done. It sounds like the training is really working.
We have three regular posties up here (on different days obviously ) and two of them like the dogs and will give them a biscuit and say hello, but the third postie is terrified of the dogs (I think he is phobic) and so I put an external postbox on the outside of our gate so he can avoid the dogs.

sounds like you are doing really well Linda . My pack go "mental" when anyone knocks the door - I just shut them in the kitchen...

That's brilliant! Lukey sounds like such a star and you have done really well with training him. Nice one!

That sounds monumental progress to me! Keep us posted on progress looks as if things are going in the right direction.
My jerry also dislikes any postman but she goes into so much of a frenzy I can't even stop her when she runs for the door, she has slipped on the floor before now. My Postie even made a comment to my OH when they met on the street, "she really want's me, doesn't she". I think it was a real missed opportunity to had a word with postie to try and "make friends". I have heard people with similar problems leave a container of "treats" outside the door to put through after post/parcel so the dog sees it as a positive, not sure if this works though.

Well done sounds like your on the right track. We are lucky our positive has known Nis since a puppy and Lizzy couldn't care less about people unless she is inside and can get a cuddle otherwise she ignores them, and Froo is used to him now. Mine don't make much of a fuss if the door goes and they stay in the living room when I answer the door, but I am going to start training them to sit near me and stay as we have been getting a few breakins near by infact across the rd was burgled 2 weeks ago and my hubby works nights every week so I want any would be burglars to know I have 3 dogs and to bugger off!
